(Central News Agency, Hualien, 7th) A live cetacean was found stranded this morning at the Meilun River mouth on the north side of Hualien Pacific Park. Personnel from the First Second Coast Guard Patrol responded to the scene. The calf had two wounds and was sent to a temporary rescue pool, but ultimately died from its severe injuries.
The Ninth Patrol Area Command of the Coast Guard stated that they received a report from a citizen via the 118 hotline about a live stranded cetacean at the Meilun River mouth on the north beach of Hualien Pacific Park. They immediately dispatched personnel from various units, including the Ninth工作站 of the Marine Conservation Agency and private conservation groups, to the scene for rescue.
The group worked together to move the dolphin onto the beach. Rescuers covered it with wet towels and continuously applied seawater to keep it moist and enhance heat dissipation.
The Chinese Cetacean Society stated that the calf was a Fraser's dolphin. Measurements showed it was approximately 105 cm long and weighed about 11.3 kg, with two wounds. Considering the calf required further observation and care, with the approval of the Hualien County Agriculture Department's Animal Protection and Conservation Section, it was sent to a temporary rescue pool.
The First Second Coast Guard Patrol stated that the calf had two wounds, determined to be shark bites, and ultimately died from its severe injuries.
When citizens find a stranded cetacean, they can follow the 'Three Dos and Four Don'ts' principle: Do right the animal, do keep it moist, and do record its breathing and heartbeat; don't expose it to wind and sun, don't stand too close to its head or tail, don't push or pull it, and don't make noise.
Concerned about marine sustainability and conservation, authorities urge the public to call the Coast Guard's '118' service hotline if they find injured marine life such as cetaceans or sea turtles on the shore that need rescue. (Editor: Zhang Mingkun) 1150607
