(CNA, Taipei, June 7, by reporter Li Jian-zhong) Taiwanese women's high jump star Chang Chiao-yin not only won gold today at the New Taipei International Athletics Open final with a height of 1.83 meters but also successfully met the qualification standard for the Nagoya Asian Games. After the event, she said to herself with teary eyes, "You've worked hard."
A total of seven athletes competed in the women's high jump final at the New Taipei International Athletics Open. Affected by a major thunderstorm, the field was slightly slippery. Chang Chiao-yin secured the gold medal after clearing 1.80 meters, then challenged her personal best and the Asian Games qualification standard of 1.83 meters.
On her first attempt, Chang's run-up speed was insufficient, and her clearance height was clearly not enough. She immediately adjusted, and on her second attempt, she successfully cleared the bar. She lay on the high jump mat, overwhelmed with emotion and unable to calm down for a long time.
Now 24, Chang jumped 1.82 meters at the age of 19, becoming the 7th best in the nation's history. However, she subsequently hit a wall, unable to break through her own record.
In a post-event interview, Chang stated, "My personal best has been stuck since my sophomore year of college until now. During this process, I doubted myself at times, thinking I might not get the chance to break my personal record. Right now, I just want to say to myself, you've worked hard."
She said with a smile, "Last week during technical training in Taichung, I also encountered heavy rain, which basically served as a simulation for today's competition conditions."
Chang also revealed that she had made a promise with her friends Lin Yu-tang and Li Hui-chun to go to the Nagoya Asian Games together. "Before today, I was the only one who hadn't qualified. Luckily, I didn't break our promise this time, and we can go to the Asian Games together." (Editor: Guan Zhong-wei) 1150607
