(CNA, Taipei, June 6, reporter Wang Cheng-chung) The Kuomintang (KMT) issued a press release today stating that during a visit to the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of New England in Boston on June 5, KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen said that the people of Taiwan have no choice but to choose peace. However, this absolutely does not mean sacrificing Taiwan's democracy and freedom. On the contrary, a powerhouse alliance between the two sides of the strait could create unimaginable achievements.
On June 5, Taipei time, Cheng Li-wen visited the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of New England in Boston, where over 30 members of the association and local overseas Chinese leaders welcomed her and the visiting delegation.
In her address, Cheng Li-wen pointed out that during its time in power, the KMT created three major miracles that were the envy of the world: economic growth, democratic transition, and the 'sacred mountain' semiconductor industry led by TSMC. However, she stated that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is attempting to erase the KMT's efforts.
Cheng pointed out that in its ten years of governance, the DPP has ruled with ideology, acted perversely, undermined the constitution, and attempted 'de-Sinicization,' pushing Taiwan to the brink of war. However, she said the people of Taiwan have awakened, and in 2028, the KMT will inevitably achieve a transfer of power and bring the country back on the right track.
Cheng also shared her reflections with the overseas Chinese on her visit to mainland China in April. At that time, she delivered a speech at Yangshan Port, saying, 'What should be flying in the sky are birds, not missiles; what should be swimming in the sea are fish, not warships.' This deeply moved countless people in mainland China and became a top trending topic on the mainland's internet for several consecutive days, fully reflecting the common desire of people on both sides of the strait for peace and their aversion to war.
Cheng noted that in the past, cross-strait relations were a zero-sum game of life and death, where disagreements could lead to war. With the evolution of the times, the KMT's current proposal is to seek common ground while reserving differences on the common political basis of the '1992 Consensus' through exchange, in pursuit of long-term peace and prosperity.
