(Central News Agency, Taipei, 5th) Ku Pao Home Economics & Commercial Vocational School is planning a transformation, raising public concern about the future of its baseball team. Kao Chih-kang, a second-generation alumnus of the school's baseball team, admitted he was shocked by the news but could understand it. He stated that for nearly 30 years, the name 'Ku Pao' has always been with him, and he expressed gratitude for the school's care for its players.
The Ku Pao high school baseball team was founded in 1995 and has nurtured many players active in professional baseball both domestically and internationally. Reports indicated the school plans to begin its transformation in 2027 (the 116th year of the Republic calendar). Concerned about the future of this traditional powerhouse, the team's founder, Tsai Ming-tang, emphasized that the baseball team will not disband and will continue to cultivate baseball talent.
Kao Chih-kang, currently the director and coordinating coach of the CPBL's Uni-President 7-ELEVEn Lions, said in an interview before a game on the 5th, 'I was indeed startled by the news, but I can understand. Many schools are facing the challenge of a declining birthrate, and transformation is a very realistic consideration.' However, he added, 'Based on personal feelings, it's a pity for the baseball team to leave Ku Pao, but I am still very grateful.'
Reflecting on his connection to the name 'Ku Pao,' Kao said, 'From high school until now, nearly 30 years, the name 'Ku Pao' has always been with me.' He noted that even after graduation, the school's teachers have continued to care for him, and their relationship has evolved into friendship.
Kao thanked the school, including successive board chairpersons, for their 30 years of support for the baseball team and their undeniable care for the students. He also expressed gratitude to 'Chairman Tsai' (Tsai Ming-tang) for his dedication to the team. Kao stated he believes that even if the team does not remain at Ku Pao, Tsai Ming-tang will still strive to keep the team alive, and thus the impact on grassroots talent development will not be significant.
