Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Meets Former Chilean President Bachelet, Pledges to Revitalize UN Authority

According to China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, a candidate for the next UN Secretary-General, in Beijing on the 4th. Wang stated that China will participate in the next UN Secretary-General election with a responsible and constructive attitude, aiming to revitalize the UN's authority and vitality. Bachelet noted that the current world is fraught with chaos and requires more, not less, multilateralism. She highly commended China's long-term commitment to promoting multilateralism and the UN cause, expressing a desire to work with China and the international community to strengthen the UN's status and role. Wang Yi emphasized that the selection of the next UN Secretary-General concerns the direction of the UN's reform and development over the next 5 to 10 years, as well as the vital interests of member states, especially those in the Global South. China will participate in the election responsibly and constructively to help the UN adapt to new circumstances and better address new challenges. The term of current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres ends at the end of this year. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had previously announced Brazil's support for Bachelet's candidacy, jointly nominating her with Chile and Mexico.
