(Central News Agency, Paris, June 4, combined foreign reports) Marjane Satrapi, the French-Iranian director and author who rose to fame with the graphic novel and animated film 'Persepolis', has died at the age of 56, a close friend confirmed to AFP today. Just a year ago, she had lost 'the love of her life'.
According to an AFP report, a close friend stated in a statement to AFP: 'Marjane Satrapi passed away from overwhelming grief over a year after the death of her husband, Mattias Ripa, the love of her life.'
Born in 1969 in Rasht, northern Iran, Satrapi moved to France in 1994 and obtained French citizenship in 2006.
Satrapi was never afraid to challenge Iran's theocratic government. In her famous work 'Persepolis', she recalled her childhood in Tehran, describing her struggles growing up under the restrictions imposed by Iran's Islamic leadership after the 1979 revolution, before her parents sent her to Europe, beginning her life in exile.
French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to Satrapi, praising her as 'a great artist who turned her childhood experiences in Iran into a story of universal significance.'
Her directorial works include the 2007 animated film adaptation of the graphic novel 'Persepolis', co-directed with Vincent Paronnaud. The film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award.
Satrapi told AFP at the time: 'Even though this is a universal film, I still want to dedicate this award to all Iranians.'
Satrapi's husband was a Swedish producer, actor, and screenwriter, and her long-time collaborator.
After his death on April 8 last year, Satrapi founded a film foundation to fund international students wishing to study filmmaking in Paris.
Since her husband's death, Satrapi's Instagram page has been left with almost only a series of images arranged to read 'I lost the love of my life', along with a photo of her husband and an announcement of the foundation's establishment. (Editor: Chen Yuting) 1150605
