65-Year-Old Driver Arrested for Reversing on Highway, Charged with Endangering Public Safety

After realizing he had taken a wrong turn at the 250km mark of National Highway No. 3 near the Nanyun Interchange, he made a U-turn on the main line and drove north against traffic. Highway police stopped Mr. Lu, issued a fine, and sent him to prosecutors on charges of endangering public safety.

The Seventh Highway Police Brigade's Dispatch Center of the National Highway Police Bureau received a report from the Eighth Brigade at 11:46 p.m. on June 2, stating that a passenger car was driving north against traffic at the 250km southbound mark of National Highway No. 3. Patrol cars were immediately dispatched and stopped the vehicle at the 235km southbound mark at 11:52 p.m. the same day. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries occurred.

The 65-year-old male driver told highway police that he had departed from Taichung City heading for Puli Township in Nantou County. When he realized he had taken a wrong turn at the 250km mark of National Highway No. 3 near the Nanyun Interchange, he made a U-turn on the main line and drove north. Highway police stated today that tests for drunk driving and drug-impaired driving were negative.

The Seventh Highway Police Brigade stated that driving against traffic on the highway is a serious threat to the safety of other road users. In addition to issuing a citation under Article 43 of the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, the driver was also sent to prosecutors on charges of endangering public safety under the Criminal Code.
