(Central News Agency, Taipei, June 5, Reporter Chen Yuting) In response to World Environment Day, the Taipei City Department of Education announced today that it will continue to promote net-zero emissions on campuses. It is expected to complete a carbon sequestration survey of approximately 47,000 trees across all primary and secondary schools in the city by the end of this year, and will gradually assist in planning carbon reduction, carbon sink enhancement, and negative carbon emission strategies.
The Taipei City Department of Education stated in a press release today that campuses are not only places for students to learn knowledge but also important bases for cultivating the next generation's sustainability literacy, practicing low-carbon living, and promoting urban net-zero governance. The net-zero transition cannot stop at declarations but must be implemented in governance systems, teaching environments, and student life.
The Department stated that in response to the challenges of climate change, it has been promoting a new campus net-zero emission life plan, focusing on low-carbon campus governance and net-zero education, including campus carbon audits, tree carbon sequestration, curriculum teaching, and resource circulation.
Regarding campus carbon audits, the Department said that after 47 pioneer schools participated last year, 60 more schools have joined this year. After the audit, feasible paths for carbon reduction, carbon sink enhancement, and negative carbon emissions will be planned, promoting campus net-zero emissions from aspects such as electricity, water, transportation, lunch, event management, and resource circulation.
The Department stated that the campus tree carbon sequestration survey was fully launched last year. By the first half of this year, surveys had been completed at 128 schools, covering over 14,000 trees. It is expected to complete the survey for all 236 schools and approximately 47,000 trees by the end of this year. Through seed teacher training and workshops, the project aims to enhance campus tree health management and planting maintenance capabilities, serving as the best teaching material for students to understand carbon sequestration, climate adaptation, and biodiversity.
The Department announced that the 2026 Taipei Education Expo will be held from June 6 to 8 at Taipei World Trade Center Hall 1. The 'Sustainability Learning' section will showcase campus net-zero governance and a new generation of smart, sustainable campuses. The public is invited to visit and learn how Taipei is starting from its campuses to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and sustainable education. (Editor: Zhang Mingkun) 1150605
