Taichung Station Implements Homeless Management Measures

Starting today, the Taichung City Government has designated luggage storage areas for homeless individuals at the Taichung Railway Station, implementing new management measures. The city has also established no-loitering and no-food-distribution zones, with a one-month trial period. The Social Affairs Bureau stated that it is collaborating with private organizations to set up service centers nearby. The Transportation Bureau noted that Taichung Station is a vital transit hub and a key gateway for the city. In recent years, an increase in homeless individuals around the station has led to issues with luggage accumulation, hygiene, and public order, affecting passenger flow. Transportation Bureau Director Yeh Chao-fu stated that the new regulations aim to balance public order, hygiene, and human rights, ensuring public spaces serve the general public. Luggage storage is limited to one bag per person using Social Affairs Bureau-issued bags, with drop-off before 7 AM and pick-up after 10 PM. The Social Affairs Bureau is providing services such as showers and counseling at nearby centers to reduce long-term loitering in public spaces.
