Vietnamese President To Lam Visits Thailand; Nations to Deepen Ties to 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership'

BANGKOK, May 28 (CNA) - Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul welcomed Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam in Bangkok today. This is To Lam's first visit to an ASEAN country since taking office. Following their meeting, both leaders announced the elevation of their bilateral relationship to a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership." The Thai Prime Minister's Office stated that the two sides exchanged views on regional and global situations and reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in economy, trade, investment, security, and regional affairs. The Bangkok Post noted that the two countries agreed to deepen the partnership, which will be upgraded in 2025, and signed a new action plan. Marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, Sanan Angubolkul, chairman of the Thai-Vietnam Friendship Association, noted that the nations will shift from a competitive economic model to a "complementary partnership." Sanan stated that the goal is to increase bilateral trade to $25 billion in the coming years and promote a "1+1" model, integrating Thailand's strengths in capital, logistics, and R&D with Vietnam's strengths in labor and free trade networks to attract global investment to Southeast Asia. Furthermore, they will strengthen cooperation in high-tech and green industries, including advanced electronics, EVs, digital technology, and renewable energy, gradually reducing reliance on traditional agriculture and textiles. To Lam is expected to travel to Singapore on the 29th to speak at the Shangri-La Dialogue before visiting the Philippines.
