A former senior official of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was arrested recently after investigators discovered gold bars worth $40 million (approximately NT$1.25 billion) in his home. According to court documents, the FBI raided the Virginia residence of David Rush this month, seizing the gold, $2 million in cash, and approximately 35 luxury watches. The New York Times reported on the 27th, citing sources, that Rush was a former senior CIA official. FBI investigations revealed that Rush provided false information on his job applications, including claiming to hold a university degree and having served as a naval pilot. Documents show that Rush, as a senior employee of a U.S. government agency, held top-secret security clearance. Rush was arrested on the 19th and charged with theft of government property. Between last November and this March, Rush repeatedly requested 'large amounts of foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars in gold bars' from his employer for 'official purposes.' Affidavits indicate that Rush never explained why he needed these items. After the gold and cash disappeared from his workplace, authorities searched his home and recovered approximately 303 gold bars worth over $40 million.
