The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) hosted a reception today to celebrate the 250th anniversary of US independence. AIT Director Raymond Greene stated that the shared commitment to democracy is a cornerstone of US-Taiwan relations. He noted that Taiwan's success serves as a reminder that the work of promoting democracy is never finished. Citing the history of US founding fathers John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, Greene emphasized that a robust democracy does not require everyone to agree, but rather to uphold core principles and values, and that free societies become stronger through vibrant debate. The event was attended by President Lai Ching-te, National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, and Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu. Greene also highlighted how TSMC founder Morris Chang helped deeply integrate the US-Taiwan tech supply chain.
