NPO Clean Ocean Ensemble (Shodoshima-cho, Shodogun, Kagawa Prefecture; Co-Representative Directors: Yuki Egawa, Hidenori Tanaka), an organization working to solve the marine debris problem, announced that it has achieved a cumulative collection of 2,500 kg of marine debris by the end of fiscal year 2025 (March 2026).

The organization has been engaged in marine debris collection, sorting, weighing, datafication, and recycling, based in Shodoshima, Kagawa Prefecture.

Beyond just beach cleanups, we aim to create a circular system that doesn't end with simply "picking up" marine debris. We are achieving this by developing collection devices, demonstrating their effectiveness on the sea and rivers, visualizing collection data, and collaborating with recycling partners.

The photo shows a segregated collection beach cleanup.

The achievement of this cumulative 2,500 kg is the result of efforts accumulated with participating citizens, collaborative partners, donors, sponsoring companies, local governments, and related organizations.

Our organization will continue to promote social implementation towards the realization of a "world without marine litter" through on-site waste collection, utilization of collection data, recycling, and development of collection technology.

Background of Achieving Cumulative 2,500 kg

The organization was established in Shodoshima in December 2020.

Since its establishment, with the vision of a "world without marine litter," it has been advancing waste collection activities on beaches and rivers, and developing technologies to efficiently collect marine debris that is difficult to recover.

Through its activities to date, it had collected a cumulative total of over 1,000 kg of marine debris by the end of 2023, and over 2,000 kg by the end of 2024.

And now, by the end of fiscal year 2025 (March 2026), the cumulative collection amount has reached 2,500 kg.

A distinguishing feature of our organization is that, in addition to simply increasing the amount of collection, we sort, weigh, and record collected waste by material, and connect recyclable materials to resource circulation in collaboration with partners.

By not treating marine debris merely as waste, but by looking ahead to datafication and recycling after collection, we aim to build sustainable marine debris countermeasures.

Main achievements related to beach cleanups, river waste collection device "kawasemi," and recycling initiatives.

Future Outlook

Our organization will continue to expand the volume of marine debris collected, improve collection efficiency, visualize collection and recycling data, increase recycling rates, and expand activities to other regions.

Specifically, we aim for social implementation to solve the marine debris problem by addressing waste flowing from rivers to the sea, improving collection devices, sharing data using marine debris maps, and strengthening collaborations with companies and local governments based on collection data and activity design.

By developing on-site collection activities into a system that includes sorting, weighing, and recycling, we will spread sustainable countermeasures that do not end with simply "picking up" marine debris.
