NPO Clean Ocean Ensemble (Shodoshima-cho, Shodogun, Kagawa Prefecture; Co-Representative Directors: Yuki Egawa, Hidenori Tanaka), an NPO working to solve the marine debris problem, announced that it has achieved a cumulative marine debris collection of 2,500 kg by the end of fiscal year 2025 (March 2026).

The organization has been working on collecting, sorting, weighing, datafying, and recycling marine debris, based in Shodoshima, Kagawa Prefecture.

Beyond just beach cleanups, we aim to create a circular system that doesn't end with "just picking up" marine debris, by developing collection devices, conducting demonstrations on the sea and rivers, visualizing collection data, and collaborating with recycling partners.

This achievement of 2,500 kg is the result of efforts accumulated together with citizens, collaborative partners, donors, sponsoring companies, local governments, and related organizations who have participated in our activities.

Our organization will continue to promote social implementation through on-site waste collection, utilization of collection data, recycling, and development of collection technology, aiming for a "world with zero marine debris."

Background of achieving cumulative 2,500 kg

Our organization was established in Shodoshima in December 2020.

Since its establishment, with the vision of a "world with zero marine debris," we have been promoting on-site waste collection activities on coasts and rivers, and developing technologies to efficiently collect marine debris that is difficult to recover.

Through our activities to date, we have collected over 1,000 kg of marine debris by the end of 2023, and over 2,000 kg by the end of 2024.

And now, by the end of fiscal year 2025 (March 2026), the cumulative collection volume has reached 2,500 kg.

A characteristic of our organization is that we not only increase the collection volume but also sort, weigh, and record the collected waste by material, and connect recyclable materials to resource circulation with partners.

By not treating marine debris as mere waste, but by looking ahead to datafication and recycling after collection, we aim to build sustainable marine debris countermeasures.

Future Outlook

Our organization will continue to expand marine debris collection volume, improve collection efficiency, visualize collection and recycling data, improve recycling rates, and expand to other regions.

In particular, we aim for social implementation to solve the marine debris problem by addressing waste flowing from rivers to the sea, improving collection devices, sharing data using marine debris maps, designing activities based on collection data, and strengthening collaboration with companies and local governments.

By developing on-site collection activities into a system that includes sorting, weighing, and recycling, we will expand sustainable countermeasures that do not end with "just picking up" marine debris.
