Kabushiki Kaisha CLAS (CLAS), headquartered in Meguro-ku, Tokyo, and led by CEO Hirotake Kubo, has commenced a pilot test for its "90-Day Purchase Plan." This plan is designed to offer customers more flexible living choices amidst rising commodity prices. Under the plan, customers receive new, unused products and can use them for three months (90 days). If the product does not meet their needs, it can be returned, and no further payments will be incurred. After the three-month period, ownership automatically transfers to the customer, and payments cease, ensuring the total cost does not exceed the product's sales price. This service is available nationwide, excluding some remote islands. The company's vision is to realize a "circular economy" by providing a system where furniture and home appliances can be used as needed. By repairing and reusing returned products, CLAS contributes to waste reduction and a decarbonized society. The background for this plan includes a 22.3% increase in the consumer price index for "household durable goods" since 2020, as reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. This rise has increased the initial investment burden for consumers, leading to a strong demand for options to "avoid failure with expensive purchases" and "try before buying." The "90-Day Purchase Plan" aims to minimize the risk of dissatisfaction with furniture and home appliance selections by allowing customers to test products in their actual living environment before committing to ownership. Key features include the delivery of new items, the option to return if unsuitable (stopping subsequent payments), and automatic ownership transfer after three months without complex buy-out procedures. Available categories include kitchen appliances, cleaning appliances, beauty appliances, gadgets, wellness products, and interior goods, with future category expansion planned. A campaign offers a 15% discount for Gold rank CLAS members. As of February 2026, CLAS serves 270,000 individual members and 3,500 corporate accounts. The company's repair and reuse system has been shown to reduce waste and resource input by 38% and CO2 emissions by 36% compared to traditional sales models, based on a Ministry of Environment verification in February 2023. CLAS was established on April 24, 2018.
