Kishamichi: A Promenade Connecting Sakuragicho and Shinko District

Kishamichi was developed as a promenade on the site of the former port railway that opened in 1911. Its characteristic landscape, where rails are visible on the surface of the wood deck, has been loved by many. Recently, triggered by renovation work to address the aging of the wood deck, we have established a new exhibition facility to showcase railway heritage that was previously hidden from view. We aim to communicate historical value and enhance the appeal as a tourism resource.

Background of the Development

When the deck was removed for construction, the entire rails and sleepers, which are usually hidden, were exposed, and the sight became a major topic on social media. Due to numerous requests to 'make it visible at all times, not just during the construction period,' we decided to establish a facility to permanently exhibit part of the railway heritage even after the construction.

The rails, sleepers, and other materials actually used in the former port railway have been preserved on-site as much as possible, with a structure that allows safe viewing through an acrylic surface from above. By performing light-ups at night and creating a production that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, we will create value as a new tourist spot.
