The Ayuko Suzuki Cup: A Half-Marathon for All Ages! Isobe Elementary Students Take on the Challenge with Toyohashi Minami High School Track Team

The 'Honokuni Toyohashi Half Marathon,' which runs through Toyohashi in spring, is an event where Ayuko Suzuki (Japan Post Group Women's Athletics Team), a Toyohashi native and Tokyo Olympic marathon representative, serves as the honorary chairperson. Driven by her strong desire to make it a half-marathon that everyone from children to adults can enjoy, an 'Elementary School 800m Race' was newly established in the previous event, featuring two laps around the track! In preparation for this event, Isobe Elementary School held a running clinic where students learned how to run and warm up from high school students. Some children even set personal bests, getting them in top condition for the big day. On the eve of the race, about 15 students from Isobe Elementary entered the 800m race. The school organized the clinic to broaden the children's potential and support their dreams. On March 17, 2026, the clinic was held at the Toyohashi City Athletics Stadium, with the cooperation of the Toyohashi Minami High School track team. The connection stems from a teacher at Isobe Elementary who also coaches the high school team. Eleven elementary students and 13 high school athletes gathered, including members of the men's relay team that reached the Tokai High School Relay for the first time. They practiced stretches and warm-ups, followed by 800m runs where high schoolers acted as pacemakers. Many students set personal bests, and the high schoolers also felt a renewed sense of purpose. This event proved to be a valuable experience for both, fostering growth and mutual inspiration.
