Confirming Life-Saving Routes Since 3/11: Jinno District Disaster Prevention Association Conducts Tsunami Evacuation Drill in Mikawa Port, Toyohashi City!

On March 11, 2026, marking 15 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake, a tsunami evacuation drill was conducted in the Mikawa Port Jinno district of Toyohashi City.

Organized by the "Jinno District Disaster Prevention Association," which consists of local businesses, employees and others confirmed evacuation routes and travel times while heading to a designated tsunami evacuation building.

The Jinno District Disaster Prevention Association was formed in May 2013 to establish communication and mutual cooperation among businesses in the Mikawa Port Jinno district (Jinno-futo-cho and Jinno-nishi-cho) and to build a disaster prevention system for the area. Every year on March 11, they conduct drills to raise disaster awareness among employees and promote early evacuation in the event of a tsunami.

This year, 206 people from 27 businesses participated, demonstrating the high level of disaster awareness in the region.

A Drill Scenario Pursuing Realism

The drill began at 10:00 AM with the signal of a large-scale earthquake. It proceeded under a tense scenario where the first wave would arrive at Mikawa Bay 77 minutes later at approximately 11:17 AM, followed by a tsunami reaching a maximum height of 2.9 meters.

Following an announcement stating, "There has been a strong tremor. Please take action to protect yourself," an evacuation order was issued. 101 of the participants donned helmets and walked toward "Life Port Toyohashi," a city facility designated as a tsunami evacuation building. Some employees were seen wearing life jackets or carrying boxes of emergency food, creating a scene that felt like a real-life emergency.
