State of the event in Reiwa 7.
On Sunday, May 3 (National Holiday) and Monday, May 4 (National Holiday), Reiwa 8, one of Japan's largest handmade music events, the "28th Takatsuki Jazz Street" and the "8th Tonda Jazz Street," will be held. Live performances by approximately 800 groups of artists from Japan and abroad can be enjoyed completely free of charge across all 69 venues in Takatsuki City.
With the desire to "make Takatsuki a fun city overflowing with music," the "Takatsuki Jazz Street" started in 1999, characterized by free admission to all venues and volunteer operation. In Reiwa 1 (2019), the "Tonda Jazz Street" was born in the Tonda area in the western part of the city. Currently, a total of about 800 groups of artists from home and abroad perform at the two jazz streets. Performances are held at a total of 69 venues including city theaters, parks, squares, schools, shrines, bars, live music clubs, and restaurants. It is a nationally renowned music event centered on jazz, attracting over 100,000 spectators every year. Held annually during Golden Week, music echoes throughout the entire city of Takatsuki as its stage.
The unique charm of this event is that you can casually stop by a performance that catches your ear while strolling around the venues. Performances of various genres, centering on jazz, are played throughout the city, allowing you to discover new sounds every time you walk down the street. Supporting this stage are citizen volunteers. They handle planning and operation, such as negotiating with musicians and setting up event venues, securing operating funds through the sales of original T-shirts and cooperation money from companies. A major feature is that all venues are free of charge, driven by the desire that "places where you can encounter music should always exist in this city."
This year, a workshop will be held where general performers selected by lottery from advance applications can receive direct musical guidance from world-active artists performing at Jazz Street, and the public can observe this. A new appeal of not just listening to music, but watching and learning has been added. In addition, some venues feature flea markets and food trucks, offering various ways to enjoy the event besides music, such as searching for bargains or enjoying street food. Please come and join this event that anyone can enjoy.
