Special One-Day Public Opening of Nagai Shrine's Main Hall, a Designated Cultural Property of Takatsuki City

On Friday, May 8, Reiwa 8 (2026), Nagai Shrine, which enshrines Nagai Naokiyo, the first lord of the Takatsuki domain of the Nagai family, will hold a special public opening of its main hall to commemorate the completion of large-scale renovation work that has been ongoing for approximately one year since last year.

The shrine is located within the precincts of Nomi Shrine, which was a shrine within Takatsuki Castle. It was founded in Kansei 5 (1793) by Naoyuki, the 9th lord, enshrining Nagai Naokiyo, who laid the foundation of the Nagai family, who were lords of Takatsuki for 13 generations over approximately 230 years. In Kaei 1 (1848), Naoteru, the 11th lord, repaired the shrine buildings and constructed the Karamon gate and Haiden (worship hall) to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Naokiyo's entry into Takatsuki Castle. The building is a complex shrine style connecting the main hall and the worship hall with an "ai-no-ma" (connecting corridor), and magnificent sculptural decorations are applied to each part. As it is a valuable historical heritage that provides insight into the Takatsuki domain's administration during the Edo period, the main hall and Karamon gate were designated as Takatsuki City cultural properties in Heisei 17 (2005).

To pass on this historical building as a source of local pride to future generations, the shrine has been carrying out renovation work, dubbed "The Grand Renovation of Reiwa," since March Reiwa 7 (2025). This work involved repairing the roof and pillars damaged by the Osaka Northern Earthquake and Typhoon Jebi (Typhoon 21) in Heisei 30 (2018), and restoring the wooden framework and sculptural decorations. The approximately one-year-long construction was completed on Saturday, April 18. On Friday, May 8, Reiwa 8 (2026), the interior of the main hall and worship hall will be specially opened to the public to commemorate its completion. Inside the worship hall, Ema (votive tablets) depicting the majestic appearance of Takatsuki Castle (a designated cultural property of Takatsuki City) and Ema depicting a daimyo procession, newly discovered and repaired during this renovation work, will be exhibited. In conjunction with the special opening, a votive concert will also be held to commemorate the completion.
