This exhibition is produced by Asobisystem, a creative company known for its diverse entertainment content rooted in Harajuku culture.

Event Overview

Discussions about rising rents and the current state of housing are becoming increasingly common. However, taking a moment to compare the past and present reveals just how much lifestyles have evolved—furniture, room aesthetics, and residents’ lifestyles have all transformed. CHINTAI has observed people’s living spaces and lifestyles from the Showa era to the Reiwa era over the past 18,250 days (50 years).

A room reflects the culture and lifestyle of its time. While furniture, interior styles, and residents’ fashion have changed with the times, CHINTAI’s close connection with people has also made us aware of the things that have remained unchanged. With this in mind, we created this event to allow visitors to enjoyably experience and compare the changes across eras.

This experiential event lets you discover what has changed and what has stayed the same through symbolic Showa and Heisei items, immersive space designs, and conversations with uniquely characterized resident cast members.

◾️ Experience Content ①: 'Things That Changed, Things That Didn’t' Exhibition

This exhibition compares lifestyle elements that have changed and those that have remained the same over the past 50 years, using informative panels. Real-life item displays allow visitors to experience the evolution of daily life across generations.

◾️ Experience Content ②: 'Showa Room & Heisei Room' with Showa Oyaji and Heisei Gal

The 'Showa Room & Heisei Room' recreates living spaces from the Showa and Heisei eras, complete with iconic items from each period. Inside the recreated rooms, character cast members—'Showa Oyaji' (Showa-era salaryman) and 'Heisei Gal' (Heisei-era fashionista)—will live as residents of their respective eras. Visitors can hear nostalgic, relatable anecdotes about daily life and iconic items, fully immersing themselves in the atmosphere of each era.

Visitors can explore the spaces as if peeking into someone’s private room, experiencing the lifestyles of each era through observation and conversation with the resident characters.

About the 'Things That Changed, Things That Didn’t' Exhibition

This exhibition humorously compares 'what has changed' and 'what has remained the same' across eras using witty taglines and visual displays.

About the 'Showa Room & Heisei Room' and the Resident Characters

At the venue, the 'Showa Oyaji'—a character blending traditional elements like short undershorts (setomono) and bellybands with kawaii aesthetics—and the 'Heisei Gal,' dressed in iconic Heisei-era fashion such as loose socks, leopard prints, and tails, will serve as resident characters in their respective rooms.

The Heisei Gal and Showa Oyaji will live in their era-specific rooms, sharing nostalgic stories and anecdotes about life and items from their time with visitors. Guests can also enjoy casual conversations with the characters.

About the 'CHINTAI Magazine' Back Issue Panels

Using back issues of 'CHINTAI Magazine,' which has accompanied apartment seekers for 50 years, wall panels (approximately five A1-sized displays) will be installed to recreate past magazine tips and trivia, allowing visitors to 'relive' the content.
