The National Gakugei Science Competition began in 1957 to encourage academic, scientific, and literary development among youth, and it celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. Last year (69th competition), a total of 73,719 entries were submitted. Starting this year, a new 'Innovation Genre' has been established, accepting entries across 13 total categories, including a 'Startup Department' to foster entrepreneurship.
