The Chiba University Environmental ISO Student Committee, in collaboration with Asahi Yuas Co., Ltd., has produced eco-baskets (shopping baskets) using PET bottle caps collected within the university. These baskets will begin use at the Chiba University Co-op from April 1, 2026 (Wednesday). This initiative is an upcycling effort aimed at promoting understanding and practice of resource circulation.

*Upcycling: Adding ideas and design to waste or unwanted items to transform them into new products.

At Chiba University, the Environmental ISO Student Committee has been collecting PET bottle caps within the Nishi-Chiba Campus since August 2021. Last year, they produced and sold original ballpoint pens utilizing the collected materials. This year, instead of selling, they created eco-baskets as products to be widely used within the university.

A total of 52 eco-baskets were made by reusing 97 PET bottle caps, and the naming design was handled by students from the student committee. With the cooperation of the Chiba University Co-op, these baskets will be used as shopping baskets at the Life Center on Nishi-Chiba Campus and the Horticulture Department store on Matsudo Campus starting April 1 (Wednesday). Additionally, at the Co-op cafeteria food court, they will be utilized as luggage baskets, combined with specially made bottom trays, to alleviate seating congestion and improve convenience. They are also planned for use in student committee event operations.

Furthermore, these products were exhibited at the "Chiba Winter Fes 2026" held on February 15, 2026, where the importance of separate collection and recycling/upcycling of PET bottle caps was communicated to citizens. The committee will continue to contribute to the realization of a circular society through student-led initiatives.
