Newsweek Japan 2026/4/28 Issue (Released on 4/21)
[From the Editor-in-Chief]
The negotiations between the US and Iran, along with the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, are constantly fluctuating. It remains unclear whether an agreement can be reached by the negotiation deadline on the 22nd. If the blockade of the strait continues, it is inevitable that shortages of oil and chemicals will lead to "war inflation." Even in Japan, price spikes have already begun to affect housing and chicken eggs, which were once called the "honor students of prices." Furthermore, gasoline prices are rising even in the US, which should have been capable of oil self-sufficiency thanks to the "shale gas revolution." In the special feature "War Inflation" in the issue released on April 21, we explored the serious impact and future prospects of the "2026 Oil Shock," which has begun to spread from oil and chemicals.
