About the Book This book is an introductory guide that comprehensively presents public interest litigation for the first time to readers who feel that “society will not change even if I speak up” or who “want to speak up but do not know how.” Public interest litigation aims to address social issues through the judiciary. In accessible language for readers without legal expertise, the book explains the process and potential of using court cases to change society when people feel that something is wrong in areas such as discrimination, labor, the environment, gender, and social security. Tickets and details: https://booka dbee .com/eve t/20260616_ovp/ Author Comments and Profiles Taiki Taniguchi | CALL4 Co-Representative, Lawyer Taniguchi says that in trains where most people are looking at smartphones, he feels quietly happy when he sees someone reading a book. Perhaps it is because he knows the unique fulfillment of finishing a book and the joy of becoming slightly different from who he was before. Although the judiciary, law, and public interest litigation may sound rigid, they are in fact close to us and form a very powerful world. This book presents that world as clearly as possible. He hopes many readers will look up from the book with the feeling that they, too, might be able to do something. Taniguchi has made improving access to justice his life’s work. He works on cases involving foreign residents, poverty support, and community building, while also practicing as an expert in public interest litigation and criminal cases. He is the founder and co-representative director of CALL4, and also serves as a director of LEDGE. Orie Maruyama | CALL4 Co-Representative, Creative Director Maruyama says she once thought the judiciary had little to do with her, but after visiting public interest litigation sites, she found herself involved for around seven years. The passionate voices of plaintiffs, the accumulated logic woven by legal teams, and the energy to change society that rises from them all show that public interest litigation has a power to move society that differs from elections and demonstrations. She hopes the book reaches readers who find it difficult or irrelevant, as she once did, and that their view of the world expands a little after reading it. After serving as editor-in-chief of an information magazine, Maruyama became independent in 2018 and joined CALL4. She has served as co-representative director since 2023. In addition to creative direction, she writes about the backgrounds of lawsuits and the thoughts and stories of the people involved. Daisuke Igeta | CALL4 Deputy Representative, Lawyer Igeta notes that whether in industrial manufacturing schemes or software development processes, there is always a stage for checking bugs. State governance is the same. The Diet makes laws in response to social demands, and administrative agencies enforce them. In that process, bugs inevitably arise at a certain rate. They may appear as people who should have been protected by law being left out, or as unforeseen disadvantages imposed on someone. The Constitution established the system of constitutional review in Article 81 so that the judiciary can remove such bugs through evidence and reason. Bringing, supporting, and discussing public interest litigation is also a way of participating in debugging state governance. Igeta positions public interest litigation as a professional field and has been involved in around 25 public interest lawsuits. He is one of the founding members of certified NPO CALL4 and manages the secretariat of LEDGE. His co-authored works include “Snowden’s Warning to Japan” and “Snowden Talks About Japan as a Surveillance State” (Shueisha Shinsho). Michiko Kameishi | Representative of LEDGE, Lawyer Kameishi says the book is for people who feel, “Isn’t this wrong?” but do not know how to speak up. Public interest litigation is not only for special people. It is a tool that every citizen who wants to make society better than it is now can use. Rather than difficult legal theory, the book presents the realities of plaintiffs and lawyers who have actually moved society. Written with colleagues working together on public interest litigation, it should resonate with anyone who has ever wanted to change society. Kameishi built her career mainly in criminal cases and won acquittals in high-profile cases such as the tattoo case, the illegal GPS investigation case, and the club Entertainment Business Act case. Since 2023, she has served as representative director of LEDGE, promoting and supporting public interest litigation. Her co-authored works include “Criminal Defense Lawyer” (Kodansha Gendai Shinsho). The book is also recommended by Hee Chul Joo, Momoko Nojo, and Mariko Yamauchi.
