The National Film Archive, in collaboration with Bun-Buku Inc., will hold a special screening event "Filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda" starting Tuesday, June 2nd, looking back at his achievements.

After joining the TV production company TV Man Union, Kore-eda gained recognition as a TV documentary director. In 1995, he released his first feature film, "Maborosi." Utilizing his documentary experience, he established his own methodology and garnered international attention. In 2018, his film "Shoplifters" won the Palme d'Or, the highest award at the 71st Cannes International Film Festival.

This year, the release of "Sheep in the Box," starring Haruka Ayase and Daigo (Chidori), is scheduled for nationwide release from May 29, and "Look Back," a live-action adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga of the same name, is also slated for release.

From his first feature film "Maborosi" (1995), which made an impression as the emergence of a new talent, to "Monster" (2023), which garnered attention for his collaboration with screenwriter Yuji Sakamoto and won the Best Screenplay Award and Queer Palm at the 76th Cannes International Film Festival, this event traces Kore-eda's filmography spanning approximately 30 years. New prints and DCPs have been created for 11 of his full-length feature films.

Two of Kore-eda's early TV documentaries, which he himself describes as "shaping my subsequent direction" — "However... In the Age of Welfare Cuts" (1991) and "Another Education - The Record of Ina Elementary School's Spring Class" (1991) — will be specially screened. Also, for the first time in Japan, all 10 episodes of "Going My Home" (2012), Kore-eda's first serialized TV drama, which he experienced more profoundly than film, and which was screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2013, will be shown on the big screen.

Talk events with Director Kore-eda and guests will also be held. Arata Iura (actor), who solidified his footing in the film industry through Kore-eda's works such as his film debut "After Life" (1999) and "Distance" (2001); Lily Franky (painter, writer, actor), who demonstrated unparalleled presence in works such as "Like Father, Like Son" (2013) and "Shoplifters" (2018); Yayako Uchida (essayist), daughter of Kirin Kiki, who appeared in many of Kore-eda's works; Yutaka Yamazaki (cinematographer), who played a significant role in Kore-eda's visual expression; Mikiya Takimoto (photographer, filmmaker); and other distinguished guests will take the stage!
