Primroses have long been familiar as a flower heralding spring, growing wild across Japan.
Based on just one single wild species, a diverse range of cultivated varieties have been created from the Edo period to the present day.

This year again, this special exhibition will display over 100 cultivated varieties from the collection held by the University of Tsukuba. We will introduce research on wild primroses, the history of primrose cultivation, and the origin and establishment of horticultural varieties.
Please come and see the essence of traditional Japanese horticulture passed down since the Edo period.
