BPO Technology Inc. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Shinya Yamada; hereinafter referred to as "the Company"), which operates the online assistant service "Fujiko-san" (https://fujiko-san.com/), conducted a "Working Style and Work Condition Survey" targeting its active assistants.
The survey found that many assistants balancing work and childcare reported experiencing an extra 1 to 3+ hours of free time per day.
Daily Time Saved Due to Remote Work (Breakdown by Hours)
It was found that 47.0% of respondents gained 2 hours of extra time per day, mainly due to reduced commuting, followed by 1 hour (25.3%) and 3 hours (17.8%). The created time was used for an increased amount of time spent with family and less pressure from household chores, as well as for personal rest and sleep, indicating an improvement in overall quality of life.
*Targeting child-rerearing households who experienced time creation (n=281)
Resolving the "First-Grade Wall" with Flexible Work Styles
The "first-grade wall" is a challenge faced when children enter elementary school. This survey revealed that approximately 70% (72.8%) of respondents with elementary school children felt satisfied with the time they had for housework and family, suggesting that flexible work styles contribute to overcoming this challenge.
[Selected responses] ・It's reassuring to be home when my child returns from school. ・Being able to listen to my child's stories immediately after they come home makes it easier to notice daily changes. ・Being able to welcome my child home with "okaeri" (welcome home) was something not possible with office-based work, and I am very satisfied.
Enhanced "Psychological Safety" for Unforeseen Events
Dealing with unpredictable events such as a child's sudden illness or school call-outs is a significant burden for child-rearing generations. This survey found that a full remote environment combined with a team-based work system reduced psychological stress caused by concern for others. Among respondents with children (378 people), 77.2% (292 people) selected "I wanted to balance housework and childcare" as a direct motivation for choosing remote work, an overwhelming majority. This indicates strong support for a system that can accommodate sudden events.
*Targeting households with children (n=378 / multiple responses)
[Selected responses] ・I can flexibly adjust my time for sudden illnesses or errands. ・I can choose to monitor my child at home during mild illnesses without forcing them to go out. ・Being able to pick up my child immediately for emergencies has reduced my mental burden.
Social Reintegration and Rebuilding "Job Satisfaction" After Leaving Work
For individuals returning to work after a break for childbirth or childcare, flexible work styles not only lower the barrier to social reintegration but also contribute to rebuilding "job satisfaction."
[Selected responses] ・Seeing myself as a "working mother" in my child's eyes has boosted my confidence. ・I was able to restart work at a manageable pace and gradually regain my skills and sense of purpose.
This survey clearly demonstrates that full remote work is not just an alternative work option but brings significant changes to time management and psychological burden for child-rearing generations. Especially, the creation of disposable time and the realization of flexible work styles are crucial factors supporting the balance between home and work, yielding insightful results for considering diverse work styles in the future.
