Bookoff Corporation, a subsidiary of Bookoff Group Holdings Co., Ltd. (headquarters: Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture; President and CEO: Yasutaka Horiuchi) that operates reuse shops like BOOKOFF, aims to realize a circular society through its reuse and recycling businesses. As a new item using the recycled material 'CDプラ' derived from discarded CDs and DVDs, it will introduce shopping baskets made with 50% 'CDプラ' (from DVD cases) at target stores from June 25, 2026.
Previous product commercialization focused on retail sales; this is the first introduction as store fixtures.
By targeting the 'shopping baskets' that many customers touch when visiting BOOKOFF, the initiative provides an opportunity to experience resource circulation in stores. Through Bookoff Group's 'visible circular economy', including the CDプラ business, customers can feel the flow where items they bring are passed on to those who need them next, while contributing to waste reduction and CO₂ emission cuts for a circular economy.
Considering 'No-Throw' Choices during Environment Month: Advancing the Circular Economy through Daily Resource Circulation
June is Environment Month. During this period, companies and individuals are encouraged to view environmental issues as their own, deepen interest and understanding of challenges like climate change and increasing waste, and review actions they can take in daily life.
Amid this, the economic activity of circulating resources and products to maximize value, which companies and individuals can practice daily to solve environmental issues, is called the 'circular economy'. Among such efforts, initiatives to circulate items, especially reuse, are gaining momentum as familiar actions that connect to the circular economy, driven by the feeling that throwing things away is wasteful.
Bookoff Group, in addition to its reuse business including BOOKOFF, also works on re-reuse and recycling of items that did not have sales opportunities in Japan. Clothing and miscellaneous goods are sold at the group's overseas reuse shop 'Jalan Jalan Japan' to local people in need. CDs and DVDs are recycled into 'CDプラ' material and commercialized, creating new value within the Bookoff Group.
Furthermore, as a mechanism for everyone to experience circulation in familiar places, the unwanted item collection box 'R-LOOP' is installed along daily life routes, offering opportunities to reuse items that were otherwise discarded due to lack of time or packaging hassle.
Additionally, events like 'August 8 Reuse Day' and 'Mori no Miyako Reuse Fest' spread the joy of reuse, transforming its image positively and encouraging people to engage in reuse with confidence.
Through these initiatives, Bookoff Group promotes the circular economy by allowing people to encounter 'no-throw choices' in daily life during Environment Month, encouraging them to pause before discarding and take circulation actions.
Expired DVDs Become Store Shopping Baskets: Experience a Visible Circular Economy through Items You Touch at BOOKOFF
As part of the 'visible circular economy' experience in stores, Bookoff will introduce shopping baskets made from 'CDプラ' material—recycled plastic from CDs and DVDs that had no sales opportunity—as store fixtures for the first time.
Bookoff purchases approximately 24 million CDs and DVDs annually. Of these, about 1,700 tons per year are items accepted with customer consent because they had no value at purchase, or items that cannot be sold within a certain period and are discarded. The company collects, sorts, and recycles these into recycled plastic material 'CDプラ' for its business. As a new CDプラ item, the shopping basket uses 50% recycled polypropylene (grade: CD-PP-Gray) and will be introduced starting June 25, 2026, at the new BOOKOFF SUPER BAZAAR Toyonaka Mikuni store.
By utilizing expired CDs and DVDs as new resources instead of discarding them, the initiative helps reduce waste and plastic use. Compared to virgin materials, it can suppress CO₂ emissions from raw materials; for this product, an 82.6% reduction is expected (*2). By deploying these baskets as daily-use items at BOOKOFF stores, the company provides an opportunity for people to experience the circular economy through its reuse and recycling business.
