BlueWX Co., Ltd. has developed an AI-based wind condition forecasting model for wind power generation. Using data from Tohoku Electric Power, the model achieves more than double the accuracy of conventional forecasts, contributing to cost reduction and stabilization of the power system.

BlueWX Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kazunari Watanabe; hereinafter "the Company"), which supports the economic efficiency, safety, and promotion of carbon neutrality in transportation, energy, and other industries affected by weather through AI-driven high-precision weather forecasting, is pleased to announce the development of a wind condition forecasting model for wind power generation.

Wind power, along with solar power and others, is expected to play a key role as an important energy source towards decarbonization. However, since power generation is greatly influenced by weather conditions such as wind speed and direction, precise wind condition forecasting is necessary in various situations including site selection, operational decisions, and power generation planning. Among these, short-term power generation planning is essential for the stable operation of the daily power system, but it requires adjustment power to compensate for wind forecast errors, incurring costs. These costs are estimated to be trillions of yen globally.

If forecast accuracy dramatically improves, it is expected to lead to stabilization of the power system and contribute to improved profitability and widespread adoption of wind power generation. To meet this need, the Company has been developing an AI wind forecasting technology known for its high accuracy in the aviation industry, with cooperation from multiple wind power operators. Now, using data and computing equipment from Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc., the developed forecasting model has successfully achieved more than double the accuracy compared to general wind condition forecasts (Note). Going forward, the Company aims to develop a high-precision wind condition forecasting system that can be commercially used at wind power facilities both domestically and internationally.
