This project addresses the common regional challenges of a shortage of participants and a temporary lack of accommodation by proposing a new way of engagement: "Camping x Festival." Last year, it attracted over 60 participants from 8 countries and is gaining attention as a leading example of community development that fosters "deep regional commitment" rather than just tourism.
In its third year, the event will strengthen its function as a "village" and further expand the circle of co-creation.
Enlivening the festival with multinational friends!
A new festival experience brought by the Camp Village, sharing "Making, Dancing, and Living."
The "Yakumo Dashi Float Procession Camp Village" is a lifestyle participation event. Participants gather in Yakumo Town from Yakumo, Hokkaido, across Japan, and around the world. They spend about a week camping together, collaborating on the production of the festival floats and practicing dances for the main festival.
Diverse Participation Styles
From those who enjoy the festival, float making, and meeting people in Yakumo, to business people who work remotely during the day and join practice sessions at night, a diverse range of people share meals and work towards a common goal.
Participants cooperate in communal living.
Deepening the Related Population
About a quarter of last year's participants were repeaters. A community is forming that is not just a one-time visit, but a "second home" in Yakumo Town.
Background: Updating a 42-year tradition from "downsizing" to "upgrading."
The Yakumo Dashi Float Procession, started 42 years ago by young people, has now become the town's largest event, but in recent years it has faced a crisis of continuation due to the declining birthrate and aging population. We aim to update the festival into a sustainable form by utilizing unused facilities like the renovated old school building "Pecorera" and "camping" for accommodation, and supplementing the workforce with "passionate fans from outside the town."
Passionate young people gather.
Accommodation Base: "Pecorera Gakusha," a creative hub regenerated from a closed school.
The accommodation base is "Pecorera Gakusha," a renovated closed school. In addition to camping in the vast schoolyard, the school building is equipped with Wi-Fi, making it possible to balance business and regional activities. At night, we offer a uniquely Hokkaido well-being experience, such as bonfires and saunas under a star-filled sky.
A luxurious time talking about dreams under the stars by a bonfire.
Tent camping at the campsite is pleasant. *Photo is for illustrative purposes.
Staying in a private room renovated from an old teacher's residence is also possible. *Reservations required, first-come, first-served.
