This feature automatically assesses in real-time, based on four criteria, whether the English text being entered meets the "answer format" required for IELTS Writing. As the paper-based IELTS is gradually phased out in Japan and transitions to the computer-based version, this feature provides a learning experience that allows users to hone both their "writing skills" and "typing skills" in a PC environment that closely resembles the actual test format.

IELTS Paper-Based Test in Japan to Conclude Sequentially in 2026; Typing Skills Also Important for Writing Test

Following a joint announcement by IELTS partners (IDP, British Council, Eiken Foundation of Japan), it has been announced that the paper-based IELTS (IELTS on Paper) in Japan will conclude with the tests held at venues in Tokyo and Osaka in August 2026, transitioning to the computer-based IELTS (IELTS on Computer) (*1).

In the computer-based version, the Listening, Reading, and Writing skills will be assessed on a computer (Speaking will remain face-to-face as before). With this transition, the Writing section, which was previously answered by handwriting, will now require typing input via keyboard. While the question trends and evaluation criteria themselves will not change, the skill of "typing English sentences while organizing thoughts on a PC screen" within the limited test time will become a more significant factor in determining scores than ever before.

The newly added "Answer Check" feature was developed with the aim of making preparation for the highly challenging Writing tasks more effective and efficient.

This feature automatically assesses and displays in real-time on the lesson screen for Writing Task 1 (Academic Module) and Writing Task 2 whether the "answer format," which is a prerequisite for scoring, is met.

Word Count: Whether the required word count is met

Use of Contractions: Whether inappropriate contractions (e.g., don't) are included in academic writing

Number of Paragraphs: Whether the required number of paragraphs to meet the answer requirements is met

Items that do not meet the conditions display real-time feedback, allowing students to understand and correct "what needs to be fixed and how" while typing.
