BELLTECHNOS Inc.'s OFFICE110 analyzed consultation data related to multifunction printers (copiers) received from December 7, 2022, to February 28, 2026, and investigated consultation trends regarding purchase and buyout.
As a result, out of 851 main consultation logs, 229 consultations were related to purchase and buyout, accounting for 26.9%. This figure surpassed the 157 consultations related to leasing during the same period.
This survey aims to clarify the background of the purchase/lease comparison, which is difficult for small and medium-sized business representatives to make when introducing multifunction printers, and to prevent cost comparisons that are biased solely towards the main unit price, as well as to prevent discrepancies in perception after introduction.
Background of the Survey
While leasing and rentals, which are easy to reduce initial costs, are attracting attention for the introduction of multifunction printers (copiers), actual consultation records also included inquiries such as "I want to buy a used multifunction printer," "I want to introduce it with a one-time purchase instead of leasing," and "I want to compare the total cost of purchase and lease."
Background factors include confirmation of the total cost burden with long-term use in mind, anxiety about lease contract periods, the price advantage of used multifunction printers, and interest in post-purchase maintenance.
On the other hand, with multifunction printers, the introduction is not the end; after introduction, maintenance contracts, counter charges, toner supply, repair services, delivery and installation fees, and setup fees are also involved.
To grasp these actual conditions, OFFICE110 investigated the consultation trends regarding "purchase and buyout" at the time of multifunction printer introduction, based on consultation data received from December 7, 2022, to February 28, 2026.
Survey Result 1
As a result of the analysis, 229 consultations related to the purchase and buyout of multifunction printers (copiers) were confirmed, accounting for 26.9% of the 851 new inquiry logs.
Within the same aggregation, there were 157 lease consultations and 71 rental consultations, with purchase and buyout consultations exceeding lease consultations.
From these results, it can be seen that a certain number of companies consider purchasing as a comparison option, not just leasing, when introducing multifunction printers.
In particular, for consultations related to purchase and buyout, there was a tendency to consider not only the main unit price but also post-purchase maintenance, counter charges, delivery and installation fees, and setup fees.
Survey Result 2
Consultations related to purchase and buyout included many inquiries not only about the purchase price but also about maintenance contracts, counter charges, additional costs after purchase, and total cost comparisons with leasing.
Specifically, 177 consultations expressed concerns about post-purchase maintenance, 145 sought to reduce the main unit price, 74 wanted to compare the total cost of purchase, lease, and rental, and 49 wanted to avoid additional costs such as delivery and installation fees and setup fees.
Note that this is a duplicate count where one inquiry may fall under multiple categories. Therefore, the sum of each item exceeds the 229 purchase and buyout consultations.
These results indicate that purchase and buyout consultations are not merely price checks but practical inquiries that include whether the equipment can be used stably after purchase.
Implications from the Survey Results
This survey revealed that the purchase and buyout of multifunction printers are important comparison items when deciding on an introduction.
The background for companies considering purchase includes suppressing total costs through long-term use, anxiety about lease contract periods, the introduction cost of used multifunction printers, and a sense of security in ownership.
On the other hand, judging solely by the main unit price may lead to overlooking maintenance contracts, counter charges, repair costs, toner supply, delivery and installation fees, and setup fees.
Therefore, when introducing multifunction printers, it is important to compare purchase, lease, and rental under the same usage period and conditions, and to consider maintenance systems and additional costs after introduction.
Supervisor's Comment
Kazuhiro Chihaya, Sales Manager, BELLTECHNOS Inc.
Purchasing a multifunction printer is a valid option for companies that plan to use it long-term. However, it is necessary to confirm not only the main unit price but also the maintenance contract, counter charges, delivery and installation fees, setup fees, and response in case of malfunction.
The background to releasing these survey data is to convey the importance of comparing multifunction printers not just by monthly fees or low main unit prices, but also by the conditions that allow for continued use after introduction.
Which is more suitable, purchase or lease, depends on the planned usage period, monthly print volume, proportion of color printing, and scope of maintenance. Therefore, we believe that presenting cost items clearly leads to more transparent estimates.
