Title: New ecovio® Portfolio for Flexible Packaging: Offering Diverse Barrier Layer Options for Organic and Paper Recycling
Subtitle:
Company Name:
Industry:
Body (first 8000 characters): Certified home-compostable ecovio® grades suitable for extrusion coating and film lamination on paper and plastic substrates.

Adjustable single or multi-layer barriers for oil, liquids, oxygen, and water vapor.

For packaging of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG): food and beverages, personal care products, healthcare items, pet food.

BASF exhibition: Interpack, May 7-13, Düsseldorf, Germany, Hall 10, Booth A44.

BASF (headquartered in Ludwigshafen, Germany) is expanding its portfolio of certified biodegradable material, ecovio®, to meet the growing demand for recycling in flexible barrier packaging. This portfolio expansion allows flexible packaging manufacturers and brand owners to choose barrier performance, disposal methods such as organic recycling and paper recycling, according to the functional requirements, processing technology, and regulatory requirements of the application. Certified home-compostable ecovio® grades can be combined to create various barrier structures based on paper and plastic substrates, ensuring high performance equivalent to conventional packaging solutions while significantly contributing to improved sustainability.

New ecovio® portfolio for flexible packaging: Offering diverse barrier layer options for organic and paper recycling.

This product portfolio is suitable for a wide range of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) packaging applications, including food and beverages, personal care products, healthcare items, and pet food.

The new ecovio® toolbox consists of ready-to-use solutions compatible with various packaging technologies, allowing for application-specific barrier adjustment against fats, oils, waxes, and liquids. It also provides high barrier properties against oxygen and water vapor and functions as a sealant layer. It can be processed on existing manufacturing equipment. Various ecovio® grades are suitable for extrusion coating, film or sheet extrusion, and also support extrusion, adhesive, and thermal lamination, applicable to both mono-layer and multi-layer structures.

This new portfolio also enables the production of ultra-thin biaxially oriented films, expanding new options for home-compostable packaging solutions. Food contact certified ecovio® offers excellent aesthetic properties, including high transparency, in addition to mechanical properties such as strength.

New flexibility for brand owners: High-barrier flexible packaging that is home-compostable.

Michael Bernhard Schick, Global Business Management, Biopolymers at BASF, states: "With the new ecovio® portfolio, we offer flexible packaging manufacturers a modular material toolbox that provides greater design freedom. This allows for flexible optimization of barrier performance, processing technology, and recycling options according to application-specific requirements and sustainability goals. This supports converters and brand owners who develop high-performance packaging solutions with BASF, while also enabling them to consider disposal methods from the product development stage. At the Interpack trade fair, we will showcase the diverse possibilities of how high-barrier, home-compostable flexible packaging can be designed using ecovio®. We will also exhibit actual samples of existing applications across various value chains, including plastics and paper."

Certified biodegradable material ecovio® supports various disposal methods depending on the substrate and package design. Paper and cardboard-based package structures can be recycled with high fiber recovery rates through existing paper recycling systems. Additionally, if food residues are present in the packaging, organic recycling through composting is also possible. Flexible plastic packaging using ecovio® can be organically recycled in both industrial and home composting environments, without generating persistent microplastics. Depending on the grade, ecovio® products are available with up to 80% bio-based content or as certified biomass-balanced materials.

By using the new ecovio® grades, barrier functions can be designed for a wide range of FMCG packaging materials targeting various foods and raw materials. In packaging formats such as pouches, sachets, trays, and boxes, high-temperature, low-temperature, and dry conditions can be accommodated.
