Axalta (NYSE: AXTA), a leading global coatings company, announced the 73rd Global Automotive Color Popularity Report today. This latest report, which examines the state of automotive body colors for 2025, reveals that white, gray, and black have once again become the mainstream vehicle colors. Axalta’s report on color popularity was first published in 1953 and is the longest-running and most comprehensive automotive color survey in the industry.

In the 2025 Global Automotive Color Popularity Report released by Axalta, steady movement rather than dramatic change was observed, revealing that achromatic colors continue to dominate the market. White maintained the top spot at 29%, followed by black (23%) and gray (22%), indicating the enduring popularity of timeless, clean designs.

Silver lost momentum, falling to 7%. Meanwhile, blue maintained its 6% share, securing its position as the most popular chromatic color. This high popularity of blue also indicates a continued interest in subtle shades of chromatic colors. Red, brown/beige, green, and yellow/gold, while holding smaller shares, continue to make a steady contribution to global vehicle colors.

Dr. Ray Chao, Vice President of Technology for Axalta’s Mobility Coatings division, stated: "This year's report reveals that while the situation where achromatic colors support global vehicle colors continues, there is a growing interest in paint finishes that bring depth, movement, and personality to vehicle styling. Overall, the 2025 landscape reflects a market that, while grounded in simplicity, is increasingly embracing sophisticated color expressions and modern paint finishes."

The report also shows that there are subtle regional differences in color popularity.

North America: White leads at 31%, though it has decreased slightly compared to 2024. This is due to the rising popularity of chromatic colors, as North American drivers are increasingly tending toward bolder choices, with blue at 10% and red at 7%. This reflects a broad cultural shift toward customization and standout styling.

Europe: In this region, where elegant and understated designs remain preferred, gray accounted for a significant 26%, a slight increase from 2024. White at 25% and black at 22% maintained a strong presence, creating a series of body colors rooted in sophistication that harmonize with Europe's smart and modern vehicle styling.

Asia: In Asia, black increased to 26% across the region, but the shift toward expressive colors also continued, with yellow/gold increasing to 4%, green to 3%, and standout colors like orange and purple increasing to 2%. In the rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) market, bold, high-saturation hues are helping brands establish uniqueness and differentiate themselves from competitors.

"Through our proprietary resin chemistry, Axalta develops and provides a diverse range of vehicle colors that meet the varied demands of different customers, cultures, and climates, while simultaneously ensuring the durability, performance, and sustainability of our coatings," said Dr. Robert Roop, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Axalta.
