Axalta (NYSE: AXTA), a leading global coatings company, today released its 73rd Global Automotive Color Popularity Report. This latest report examines the landscape of automotive body colors for 2025, revealing that white, gray, and black have once again become the mainstream body colors. Axalta's report on vehicle color popularity was first published in 1953 and is the automotive industry's longest-running and most comprehensive color survey report.

Axalta's 2025 Global Automotive Color Popularity Report revealed steady movements rather than dramatic shifts, with achromatic colors continuing to dominate the market. White held the top spot at 29%, followed by black (23%) and gray (22%), indicating a sustained popularity for timeless, clean designs.

Silver lost momentum, dropping to 7%. Meanwhile, blue maintained a solid 6%, cementing its position as the most popular chromatic color. This strong popularity of blue also highlights an ongoing interest in nuanced shades of chromatic colors. Red, brown/beige, green, and yellow/gold, though holding smaller shares, definitely contribute to the global automotive color palette.

Dr. Ray Chao, Vice President of Technology for Global Mobility Coatings at Axalta, said: 'This year's report reveals that while achromatic colors continue to underpin global automotive colors, there is growing interest in paint finishes that bring depth, movement, and personality to vehicle styling. Overall, the 2025 landscape reflects a market that embraces sophisticated color expression and modern paint finishes while keeping simplicity as its foundation.'

The report also notes subtle regional differences in color popularity.

North America: White tops the list at 31%, but has decreased slightly compared to 2024. This is due to the rising popularity of chromatic colors; North American drivers are increasingly opting for bolder choices, bringing blue to 10% and red to 7%. This reflects a broader cultural shift towards customization and standout styling.

Europe: Because elegant and understated designs continue to be preferred in this region, gray accounted for a large proportion at 26%, a slight increase from 2024. White and black maintained a strong presence at 25% and 22% respectively, creating a suite of body colors rooted in sophistication that harmonize with Europe's smart, modern vehicle styling.

Asia: Across the region, black increased to 26%, but there is also a continuing shift toward expressive colors: yellow/gold increased to 4%, green to 3%, and standout colors like orange and purple rose to 2%. In the rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) market, bold and highly saturated shades help brands establish their uniqueness and differentiate themselves from competitors.
