At Adventure World (Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture), two flamingo babies were born for the first time in 7 years since 2019. On Saturday, March 28, 2026, one Caribbean flamingo was born, followed by one Chilean flamingo the next day, Sunday, March 29. This marked the first flamingo births in the "BIRDTOPE" area, which opened in 2025. It can be said that this is the result of the construction of the ecological environment "BIRDTOPE," which brought out the birds' natural breeding desire and rearing behavior. After experiencing the deep sorrow of a past avian influenza outbreak, the staff worked together to "reproduce the original ecological environment" and challenge "natural rearing," efforts that are now beginning to bear fruit. Also, several individuals are currently incubating eggs, raising expectations for the birth of new lives in the future.
Thoughts on Building the "BIRDTOPE" Life Circulation System Previously at the park, during the winter, birds were moved from outdoor ponds to separate facilities as a countermeasure against highly pathogenic avian influenza. However, changes in the environment caused stress for the birds, affecting their breeding. In addition, the risk of pests such as crows outdoors was high, leading to a continuing situation where eggs had to be immediately collected into incubators after laying, forcing the choice of "artificial rearing." Furthermore, an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza inside the park in November 2022 resulted in the loss of 69 precious lives. "We will never repeat such a tragedy. We want to create a place where birds can live freely and connect life in their natural state throughout the year." Born from this strong desire is "BIRDTOPE," equipped with anti-bird netting to prevent viral infections while reproducing an ecosystem close to nature. As a "Topos (place)" where "Bio (life)" breathes, a major focus was placed on preparing an environment where not only birds but also aquatic life and microorganisms coexist, reproducing the "rhythm of the ecosystem" close to the wild.
