Avex Creator Agency Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Shinsuke Kato; hereinafter ACA), which operates the nighttime alternative space [WALL_alternative], will hold a duo exhibition "CUE" by Ryo Ogata and Shotaro Sanada from Wednesday, April 15 to Saturday, May 9, 2026.
This is the first exhibition planned and composed together by these two artists, who were contemporaries during their undergraduate years at Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai). After graduation, Ogata went on to the graduate school of Geidai, while Sanada proceeded to the graduate school of the University of Tokyo, honing their skills in different fields. This exhibition serves as a place where the two intersect again immediately after completing their graduate studies.
Ogata depicts the invisible, while Sanada questions the structure of the landscape that is supposed to be visible.
When the expressions of these two, who face the world from different directions, intersect, our perception is quietly shaken, and new images emerge.
Ogata has found connection points in ukiyo-e and Buddhist paintings, expressing modern "yokai" and "invisible beings" as the subject of his works through paintings, 3D objects, and animations.
Meanwhile, Sanada has been engaged in informatics research at the University of Tokyo's graduate school alongside his activities as a painter, exploring the nature of creativity in the AI era. He has received high praise domestically and internationally for his large abstract paintings that originate from physical sensations such as gravity and time.
This exhibition serves as an attempt to touch upon the "signs just before something appears." It presents new sensations and the "CUE" born from the intersection of the perspectives of these two artists who have watched each other's creative processes.
The venue will feature a total of over 20 new and old works, focusing on large pieces exceeding 2 meters by both artists, in addition to their first 4 collaborative pieces created specifically for this exhibition. A space where overwhelming scale and delicate expression intersect will spread out before you.
Furthermore, at the adjacent bar, Japanese wine selected to allow you to experience the exhibition's concept through taste will be available. We will serve wine from 'domaine tetta', a winery that has revitalized abandoned farmlands in Okayama and awakened dormant time and possibilities, and you can also enjoy a food menu centered around naturally cultivated vegetables.
On the first day, Wednesday, April 15, an opening reception will be held from 18:00. The artists are scheduled to be present.
Also, on the same day from 19:00 to 20:00, a special live performance by a secret guest will be held to commemorate the opening of this exhibition.
Furthermore, on Saturday, May 2, a talk event featuring Ryo Ogata and Shotaro Sanada will be held in the format of a MEET YOUR ART public recording. They will delve deeper into their initiatives for this exhibition and the background of their respective creative works.
Please take this opportunity to visit.
