"The Clockwork Mansion Murders" is the fifth installment in the "Mansion" series by Yukito Ayatsuji, a leading author in the Japanese mystery world. This series, which began with his 1987 debut work "The Decagon House Murders," has exceeded 8 million copies sold worldwide and has captivated many readers both in Japan and abroad as a group of works that have led the "Shin Honkaku" (new orthodox) mystery movement. This work is known as one of the most popular in the series, having won the 45th Mystery Writers of Japan Award (Best Novel category), and has recently attracted renewed attention to the original work, with its recent screen adaptation also generating significant buzz.
The story is set in a mysterious mansion called "Clockwork Mansion," built on the outskirts of Kamakura. Takaaki Kawaminami and eight others, who are visiting the mansion as part of an occult magazine reporting team, hold a "séance" to contact the ghost of a girl said to haunt the mansion. However, that night, a beautiful psychic suddenly disappears, and a series of murders occurs within the closed mansion. In a space cut off from the outside world, doubt and fear amplify.
In charge of the narration is voice actor Takahiro Yoshino, who is active in a wide range of fields such as dubbing for anime and movies, narration, and who has also handled many audiobook readings. With his solid expressive power, having played a variety of roles, he delicately depicts the psychology of each character and the tension of each scene.
This work, which shines with elaborately laid-out foreshadowing and a bold mechanism surrounding time, is a piece in which the real thrill of Shin Honkaku mystery is condensed. The intense story, which unfolds in the extreme situation of a "closed circle," allows you to enjoy the strange atmosphere of the mansion that ticks away every moment, and the tension filled in the closed space, more vividly by listening to it on Audible.
