Intraocular Contact Lens "IPCL": Sharing Post-Launch Safety Information and Clinical Findings

Background of the Seminar

The 'IPCL', which received domestic regulatory approval in April 2025 and launched in September of the same year, is garnering attention as a new option for vision correction. While phakic intraocular lenses are widely adopted as an effective means of correcting myopia and myopic astigmatism, achieving favorable outcomes requires appropriate case selection, precise lens size selection, and careful post-operative follow-up.

Under the theme of 'Basic Strategies for Success with IPCL - Phakic Intraocular Lenses', this seminar is widely targeted at ophthalmologists interested in myopia and refractive surgery. It will cover the latest knowledge on long-term safety evaluations, including complication prevention, as well as insights gained from actual clinical cases based on extensive usage experience.

About IPCL®

IPCL is an intraocular contact lens made of an acrylic polymer material primarily composed of HEMA, which is widely used in intraocular lenses for cataracts and standard contact lenses.

Although IPCL has been sold and used internationally since 2017, domestic multicenter clinical trials were conducted in Japan from December 2021 to September 2023, with the cooperation of Professor Emeritus Kanjiro Masuda (The University of Tokyo) and Professor Shigeru Kinoshita (Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine).

In these clinical trials, efficacy and safety were verified among 109 patients diagnosed with moderate to severe myopia or myopic astigmatism. Based on these results, IPCL obtained regulatory approval from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in April 2025, and is a new intraocular contact lens that was launched in Japan in September of the same year.
