Atelier Shimura (Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Representative: Shoji Shimura) will host a glass kiriko obidome (sash clip) exhibition featuring Edo Kiriko artist Ikuko Ogawa. Edo Kiriko is said to have originated in the late Edo period when Kyubei Kagaya, a glassware wholesaler in Odenmacho, Edo, applied cut-glass patterns to glass using emery powder. The technique of refracting light through deep grooves, and sometimes softening the light as frosted glass, utilizes the sensitive perception of natural light unique to the Japanese.

Ms. Ogawa completed nine years of apprenticeship under Hideo Kobayashi, a leading figure in Edo Kiriko, and is an accomplished artist who received the Japan Art Crafts Association Encouragement Award at the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition. Based on solid techniques but not bound by tradition, she has pursued shapes and colors that she genuinely loves. The contrast between depth of color and transparency is a charm unique to Ms. Ogawa. Her work of capturing incoming light in color and shape resonates under the theme of "Light and Color" with Atelier Shimura, which projects the colors of botanical life onto kimonos and obis.

This exhibition introduces a variety of playful obidome that bring a cool breeze to the height of summer.

About Atelier Shimura Atelier Shimura is a textile brand created by a next generation of craftsmen centered around Shoji Shimura, the grandson of the dyeing and weaving artist Fukumi Shimura. People attracted to the botanical color world gather at workshops in Kyoto and Tokyo to produce one-of-a-kind products. While inheriting rich philosophy through dyeing and weaving, the brand daily explores ways to beautify lifestyles and appropriate activities for the times. It continues new challenges such as providing cultural experiences through workshops and learning sessions centered on dyeing and weaving. We look forward to meeting people with whom we can deepen our learning in nature and art, and hope to always be an open studio.
