ASURX Inc. (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo) will hold an event on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Academy Mukougaoka (Bunkyo-ku), in honor of the International Day of Families established by the UN on May 15. The event invites parents and children, regardless of whether they have a wheat allergy, to experience cooking together and enjoy a meal together. This event serves as an initiative for both food allergy awareness and dietary education, and will be held with the backing of Bunkyo City.
This year marks the 3rd time this event is being held.
In addition to the in-person cooking class, we are preparing to stream it online nationwide so people can participate from anywhere.
1. Event Planning Intent
The purpose of this event is to deepen society's overall understanding of the ever-increasing issue of food allergies, placing importance on raising awareness not only among those affected but also those who are not. Allergies are by no means an issue for specific individuals; they are a common societal challenge where the knowledge and consideration of those around them can dictate life-threatening risks such as anaphylaxis.
Through the cooking experience using rice flour, this project shares the joy of "eating the same thing together" regardless of allergies. The experience of gathering around a dining table safely and with peace of mind fosters a discovery of the new appeal of rice and a gratitude for nature's blessings.
Furthermore, by having children correctly understand their own characteristics and actively engage in cooking, it fosters their "self-management ability to protect their own lives." At the same time, it serves as an opportunity for the children around them to cultivate a "sense of coexistence" by acknowledging each other's differences and naturally helping one another.
2. Background of the Event
According to a survey by the Japan Society of School Health (FY2022), there were approximately 527,000 schoolchildren with food allergies, with a prevalence rate of about 6.3% and an anaphylaxis rate of 6.2%. Both figures have increased significantly over the past 20 years compared to FY2004 (approx. 329,000 schoolchildren with food allergies, 2.6% prevalence, 0.14% anaphylaxis). Anaphylaxis, in particular, occurs suddenly and poses a life-threatening risk if a prompt response is delayed.
However, currently, food allergies still tend to be heavily left to the affected individuals and their families, and it cannot be said that the understanding and preparedness of those around them are sufficient. The risk of casual contact or well-intentioned actions leading to serious accidents has been pointed out, making the sharing of correct knowledge across society an urgent task.
Moreover, families dealing with allergies are forced to live a life constantly facing danger, not only in daily meal management but also when eating out, traveling, and in school life. The psychological burden of asking for consideration from others, such as the tension of continuously selecting safe foods and the loneliness of not being able to eat with everyone, is immense and has long-term effects on the whole family.
