## Overview
It is now a consensus that corporate activities depend heavily on natural capital, either directly or indirectly, and that this natural capital is being degraded by human activities. There is a growing awareness of the need to improve the state of nature, moving beyond the stage of merely 'minimizing damage,' bringing the concept of 'Nature Positive' into focus. In 2023, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced the 'Nature Positive Initiative,' which aims to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030, and achieve full recovery by 2050, using 2020 as a baseline.
However, in domestic discussions regarding Nature Positive, it remains unclear what technologies or measures are recognized as 'positive' and what their scope entails. For example, regarding the reduction of fossil fuel use through the introduction of renewable energy, there are conflicting claims such as:
- It is merely a measure to reduce the negative, and thus not Nature Positive.
- By avoiding greenhouse gas emissions and preventing ecosystem destruction and air pollution, positive impacts on nature can be expected in the long term.
Therefore, we are holding a webinar for business professionals who carry the future of their companies, under the themes of 'The Current State of Nature Positive' and 'A Bird's Eye View Towards Sustainable Business.' In this lecture, we will organize the concept of Nature Positive from the following three perspectives:
- Narrowly defined positive: Technologies that directly provide positive impacts to nature.
- Broadly defined positive: Technologies that minimize negative impacts on nature.
- Monitoring: Technologies that measure and evaluate impacts on nature.
After presenting this framework, we will introduce specific examples useful for business. We hope this will deepen your understanding of the role of companies in building a sustainable society and provide hints for discovering new business opportunities.
*This lecture is a recorded broadcast of a past webinar.
