Exhibition Overview
In this 17th exhibition at 'Gallery & Bakery Tokyo 8-bun,' which combines an art gallery with a bakery & cafe, we are hosting artist Yuta Okuda's new solo exhibition 'With Gratitude' starting Saturday, April 11, 2026.

Yuta Okuda was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1987. After studying fashion design in Japan and the UK, he worked as a designer before pivoting to become an artist in 2016. Since then, he has actively participated in solo and group exhibitions domestically and internationally, continuously creating and presenting works. Recently, he has focused on a series of flowers that incorporates 'contingency' such as the flow and overlapping of paint. His expression, which composes the movement of paint with powerful strokes and delicate line drawings with a pen on the same canvas, is a major charm of Okuda's work.

Furthermore, there is a connection with the TODA BUILDING, the venue for this exhibition, as Okuda's works were largely printed on the temporary enclosures set up during the building's construction, giving many passersby a chance to see them. This exhibition can be seen as a place to reconnect with that involvement from the construction process prior to its opening.

This exhibition displays paintings with bouquet motifs, centered on the 'With Gratitude' series. In the air that signals the arrival of spring, vivid and fresh bouquet works will create a gorgeous exhibition space in the venue. Please take this opportunity to come and see it in person.

Exhibition Statement
This exhibition, "With Gratitude," is a series I have been creating in the midst of the social tension and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was an era where the premises of daily life were greatly shaken, and actions and relationships with people that were considered "normal" were suddenly lost.
Amidst this, I became more consciously aware of the changes in my own emotions and actions than ever before.
Even under situations where anxiety and restrictions continue,
by consciously directing gratitude toward "what can already be done now,"
one's inner attitude turns positive, and that change ripples out to actions and results. I have felt such psychological changes through my own personal experience. This series was created as an attempt to visualize such internal processes.

Around the same time, I was facing the question of "What should I draw now as an artist?"
Rather than directly depicting social events,
perhaps making the very "state of consciousness" that supported me during times of confusion the subject matter
could become an expression with contemporaneity.
Thinking so led me to the creation of this work.

The flowers I paint as a motif
have always been within me since childhood as a symbolic presence to convey gratitude and thoughts to others.
I hope that colorful flowers exist to bring a quiet blank space and sensory affirmation to those who view them, without forcing emotions or explaining with words.

What I aim for with this series is not to change the situation itself.
Rather, it is to present how a change in consciousness regarding how one perceives a situation can influence an individual's actions and future.
I perceive "With Gratitude" as an expression of resilience, starting from the extremely private and internal sensation of gratitude, quietly opened up to others living in the same era.

I am sincerely grateful to be able to present my work at this wonderful venue,
and to share this space connected by wonderful artists.
Also, having my work printed on the temporary enclosure of this TODA BUILDING during its construction...
