Archeda Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Hiromasa Tsumura; hereinafter "Archeda"), which develops MRV solutions for nature-based carbon credits, has commenced a joint study and demonstration with EY New Japan Limited Liability Audit Corporation (hereinafter "EY New Japan") regarding the use of satellite data in audit and assurance services for carbon credits. This initiative is part of the technical development project under the recently adopted Strategic Space Development Fund Satellite (Phase 2) "Advancement of an Asia-oriented Platform for Nature-based Carbon Credits Using Satellite Data."

Background of this Initiative
As systems for sustainability information disclosure are being developed both domestically and internationally, carbon credits are becoming increasingly important not only as voluntary corporate initiatives but also from the perspectives of finance and corporate value.
On the other hand, ensuring the credibility of nature-based carbon credits requires long-term observation of widely distributed forests and farmland. Traditional methods centered on field surveys face challenges in terms of efficiency and comprehensiveness. In this context, the use of satellite data, which enables wide-area and continuous observation, is gaining attention as an effective means.
In this project, Archeda's satellite data analysis technology will be combined with EY New Japan's expertise in sustainability assurance services and data utilization/governance. Together, they will jointly study and demonstrate the feasibility of using satellite data in audit and assurance services for nature-based carbon credits.
Future Outlook
With the cooperation of EY New Japan, Archeda will expand its scope to include natural capital such as forests, rice paddies, and mangroves in the Asian region, and will proceed with the verification of monitoring methods using satellite data.
Furthermore, with an eye toward future application in natural capital accounting (an accounting method for appropriately evaluating and recording the value of natural capital), the company will work on the social implementation of an "efficient audit support solution" that uses remote sensing to continuously monitor natural capital, complementing field surveys.
Comment from Keiichi Ushijima, EY Japan, EY Climate Change and Sustainability Services, East Asia and Japan Regional Leader (EY New Japan):
"In recent years, the use of satellite data in advisory and assurance services within the sustainability field has attracted attention as a means to facilitate visualization and data conversion, enhancing comparability, transparency, and reliability. While carbon credits are an effective tool for advancing decarbonization, ensuring their credibility has been a long-standing challenge. Through this project, we hope to demonstrate a practical step toward improving credibility and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society."
Comment from Hiromasa Tsumura, Representative Director of Archeda Inc.:
"Nature-based carbon credits are an important means of achieving a decarbonized society, but ensuring their credibility is a common global challenge. Our company has been working to advance MRV processes using satellite data and AI technology. Being able to proceed with joint study and demonstration with the team at EY New Japan, who have long been at the forefront of ensuring reliability in audit and assurance services, is extremely significant for this project. By combining dynamic monitoring using satellite data with the knowledge of reliability assurance backed by assurance practice, we will jointly pursue a form of carbon credit that is truly trusted by market participants, and contribute to decarbonization in Asia and the world."
About Archeda
Archeda is a startup that develops MRV solutions for nature-based carbon credit projects using satellite data, with the mission "Unlock the hidden value of the Earth." It provides optimal analysis solutions at each stage of the project development process (site selection, project registration, monitoring, reliability checks, etc.). The company focuses on projects based on natural environments such as forests, agriculture, and mangroves, and supports international methodologies such as VCS, Gold Standard, and JCM. Furthermore, it also provides solutions for local governments and forestry businesses, such as estimating forest resources and detecting illegal logging using satellite data.
