Background
For individuals who have difficulty speaking, such as those with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) or who have undergone laryngectomy, non-invasive BMI technology holds significant potential as a new means of communication. While research is progressing globally towards the practical application of technology that enables communication by decoding speech intent from brainwaves and inputting text to a computer or synthesizing speech via AI, the lack of a large-scale, high-quality EEG data infrastructure serving as a common benchmark has been a bottleneck for the entire field.
ARAYA's X Communication Team aims to resolve this issue and foster co-creation and development in the neurotech field by releasing the EEG data accumulated through IoB research to the global research community. JapanEEG is the database built as the core of this initiative.
Objectives and Future Prospects
The objective of JapanEEG is to organize and release the data accumulated by the X Communication Team during Phase 1 of the IoB research in a reusable format, making it widely available to researchers and developers worldwide. The dedicated website will provide a consolidated reference for dataset specifications, acquisition methods, and related research outcomes.
Moving forward, ARAYA will continue to promote the development of the non-invasive BMI field through the release of JapanEEG and advance the social implementation of BMI technology for communication support for individuals with speech difficulties.

About the Moonshot R&D Program Goal 1, Kanai Project "Internet of Brains (IoB)"
The Moonshot R&D Program is a large-scale Japanese research program that tackles various challenges faced by Japan and the world through bold research innovations that go beyond the extension of conventional technological development. It is led by the Cabinet Office and promoted by multiple organizations, including the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Currently, 10 goals have been set, and research and development are progressing through multifaceted approaches.
Goal 1, to which IoB belongs, aims to "realize a society where people are freed from the constraints of body, brain, space, and time by 2050." The core technology for this is the cybernetic avatar. Through cybernetic avatar technology, we aim to realize a society where everyone can challenge what they want to do, accommodating age and physical diversity.
The mission of IoB is "Liberation from physical constraints through the extension of physical and perceptual abilities." By advancing research in the field of brain neuroscience and developing BMI (Brain-Machine Interface), we aim to develop cybernetic avatar technology. We are pursuing research and development of technologies such as robots that can be operated simply by thinking and telepathy-like technologies that transmit thoughts to others, with the goal of removing societal barriers and challenges, and realizing a future where people of diverse backgrounds are freed from various constraints and can freely express themselves and participate in social activities.

About the X Communication Team
The X Communication Team is a research team that promotes research and development of "BMI that connects minds." By fusing ARAYA's strengths in cutting-edge AI, neuroscience, and theoretical research on consciousness, we explore the potential of new communication methods as an alternative to speech, aiming to realize a society where diverse people can choose communication methods that suit them and understand each other better than ever before.
Specifically, we are working on the social implementation of BMI that decodes the words users want to convey using non-invasive electroencephalography, enabling communication through text input to computers or AI-based speech synthesis. This team's activities are also conducted as part of the Cabinet Office Moonshot R&D Program Goal 1 Kanai Project "Internet of Brains (IoB)" by the National Research and Development Agency Japan Science and Technology Agency.
