Workshop by Head of School Keung

Head of School Keung, in collaboration with Japanese members of the Cambridge Community School Board, will lead the following workshop:

Workshop Title: What success looks like — Assessment for Learning (AfL)

This workshop aims to deepen understanding of Assessment for Learning (AfL), returning to the fundamental purpose of assessment: "supporting student learning and guiding school improvement." Inspired by the research of Jan Chappuis, Nancy Love, and Dylan Wiliam, participants will gain the following insights:

Deepen understanding of the essential purpose of assessment as a tool to support learning.
Interpret classroom data meaningfully and use it for instructional judgment.
Reframe formative assessment as a "continuous learning process."
Consider where their school's assessment practices fit within the Assessment Continuum.
Examine how to design assessments that maintain reliability and authenticity even under the influence of AI.

The workshop will present the perspective that assessment can be both formative and summative, depending not on the assessment tool itself, but on "how the obtained information is used." Furthermore, it will demonstrate that while excessive grading and high-stakes assessments can become barriers to learning, AfL practices function as "guardrails" that guide and support learning.
