[Lecture Rationale]
The mechanisms of corrosion and deterioration change depending on the material and environment. Materials constituting electronic equipment and components are primarily metallic and polymer materials, but their types are diverse, and in most cases, they form composite materials (multi-materials) through combinations. These composite materials are exposed to humidity, trace gas environments, and environments with sea salt and dust accumulation, leading to corrosion and deterioration. Furthermore, with circuits of electronic components densely and three-dimensionally arranged on substrates, and with voltages and currents often applied to miniaturized circuits, unique forms of corrosion and deterioration occur, making the mechanisms complex.
Small, inexpensive, and sometimes unitized electrical equipment and components are often replaced without cause investigation when troubles occur, leading to insufficient accumulation of corrosion and deterioration data, which cannot be utilized for countermeasure planning.
Therefore, this seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to learn the basics of corrosion and deterioration of electronic equipment and components, which are determined by materials and environments. By understanding the environments to which electronic equipment and components are exposed, learning the mechanisms of corrosion and deterioration, and studying accelerated corrosion testing methods, accelerated deterioration testing methods, and post-test evaluation techniques, it is believed that the accuracy of lifespan prediction for electrical equipment and components will improve. Furthermore, we will clearly introduce troubleshooting examples of electrical equipment and components, and touch upon practical corrosion and deterioration countermeasures. We believe participants will gain many hints for investigating the causes of failures and planning countermeasures for electronic equipment and components in the field.
We believe that not only those who are troubled by the corrosion and deterioration of electronic equipment and components, but also those involved in the manufacturing and design of electronic equipment and components, and those responsible for quality control and quality assurance, will discover useful episodes and technologies.
