Amateras Space Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Taisei Hasumi) is pleased to announce its participation as a collaborating organization in JAXA's publicly solicited "Space Strategic Fund Phase 2 / Foundational Technologies for Ensuring Safety in Manned Space Transport Systems." The proposal, led by Space System Development Co., Ltd. as the primary organization and with Space NS Plan Co., Ltd., has been adopted. In this project, we will work to establish domestic foundational technologies for ECLSS (Environmental Control and Life Support System), which is crucial for ensuring safety in manned space transport. This aims to establish Japan's unique life support technologies and achieve high safety and reliability in future manned space activities.
Background and Objectives
After the planned end of operations for the International Space Station (ISS) in 2030, low Earth orbit (LEO) is expected to transition to a new space economy led by the private sector. However, ECLSS (Environmental Control and Life Support System), a core technology for safely transporting, sustaining, and returning humans to space, has long been dependent on overseas technology.
For Japan to play a proactive role in manned space development in the future, the self-reliance of life support technology and the establishment of a domestic technological foundation are indispensable.
In this project, we will integrate elemental technologies held by domestic companies to build Japan's unique ECLSS foundational technology and establish its safety and reliability. By doing so, Japan aims to achieve self-reliant manned space transport and habitation technology, contributing to strengthening the international competitiveness of the next-generation space industry and creating a new space economy.
Overview of the Development Project
This project aims to establish foundational technologies for a "Pressurized Cabin ECLSS (Environmental Control and Life Support System)" essential for round-trip flights of manned spacecraft.
Our company will primarily focus on oxygen and nitrogen management technologies in this project. This technology is a crucial foundational technology common not only to manned space transport but also to future space habitation technologies and spacesuits, making it an indispensable element for future manned space development.
In addition to manufacturing and verifying physical prototypes (Bread Board Models - BBM), we will utilize advanced analysis and simulation technologies to enable safety evaluations during emergencies such as fire, rapid depressurization, and harmful gas generation, which are extremely difficult to test with actual equipment. This will allow us to achieve high levels of safety and reliability while suppressing development costs and time, and promote the development of the following key elemental technologies:
・ Oxygen and nitrogen management technology
・ CO₂ and trace harmful gas removal technology
・ Integrated analysis and simulation technology utilizing digital twin
・ Microgravity-compatible space toilet system
In the future, in addition to being installed in domestic manned space transport systems, we also envision supplying components to overseas commercial space stations, contributing to the strengthening of Japan's manned space development and the international competitiveness of its space industry.

Comment (Taisei Hasumi, Representative Director, Amateras Space Inc.)
In manned space transport, ECLSS (Environmental Control and Life Support System) is the "core technology that directly supports human life." Amateras Space takes on the responsibility and determination to work on technologies that safeguard human lives, bringing together Japan's advanced technological foundations to establish life support technologies for safe and sustainable human activities in space, and to thoroughly verify their safety and reliability. Furthermore, the technologies cultivated in this project will not be limited to the space sector but will also actively consider dual-use applications such as ensuring safety in extreme environments and environmental control technologies, promoting their social implementation. Through this project, we aim to contribute to Japan's self-reliance in manned space activities and strengthen its international competitiveness.
Actively Strengthening Recruitment
Currently, humanity is once again heading to the Moon, and an era where people live in space is becoming a reality. Amateras Space is strengthening its recruitment of personnel to lead manned space development at this historic turning point. We are actively seeking technical lead personnel who can design and integrate manned space development, including ECLSS (Environmental Control and Life Support System), from a holistic perspective rather than as individual elements, as well as technical members responsible for practical work in mechanical/fluid dynamics, control/simulation, and materials/chemical processes. We are not just looking for excellent engineers. We are looking for individuals who can structure the manned space domain, drive everything from requirements definition to safety design and verification planning, and view this challenge not just as "work" but as one of the themes they dedicate their lives to. We await applications from those who are serious about facing the era where people live, work, and build society in space.
