Almure Inc. (Headquarters: Tokyo, Representative Director & CEO: Takanori Momose) is pleased to announce the commencement of joint research on Confidential Computing / TEE (Trusted Execution Environment) technology with the Kenji Kono Laboratory at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University. Almure is developing a platform to securely utilize enterprise confidential data for AI Agents using its proprietary confidential computing technology. In this joint research, we will combine the advanced knowledge in system security held by the Kono Laboratory with Almure's industry-driven implementation technology to accelerate research and development towards practical application.

▶︎ Overview of Joint Research

In the application of AI in enterprises, compliance with industry-specific security standards, especially in handling confidential data, is the biggest bottleneck. Almure is advancing the development of "confidential computing" technology, which protects data even during processing at the hardware level, as a means to structurally eliminate these compliance costs. However, existing confidential computing technologies have a fundamental trade-off: ensuring strong isolation limits the executable workloads, making it difficult to apply them to advanced processing like AI Agents.

This joint research aims to resolve this trade-off and establish a new confidential computing architecture that achieves both the security level of cryptographic key management and the versatility for advanced AI execution. By combining the advanced knowledge in system security held by the Kono Laboratory with Almure's industry-driven design and implementation technology, we will promote research and development towards practical application.

▶︎ Comments

[Kenji Kono, Professor, Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University] The limits of protecting confidential data solely through software are being reached, and expectations for confidential computing, which protects confidential data at the hardware level, are rising. Current confidential computing lacks versatility due to various technical constraints. We have been conducting fundamental research to alleviate such technical constraints. Through this joint research with Almure Inc., we hope to return the results of this fundamental research to society.

[Takanori Momose, Representative Director & CEO, Almure] For confidential computing technology to truly solve enterprise challenges, design from both fundamental research and practical requirements is indispensable. Through joint research with Professor Kono, we will further deepen our "purpose-built" technological approach and accelerate the achievement of our goal of escaping operational security by structurally eliminating security compliance costs.

▶︎ About Keio University Kono Lab

Professor Kenji Kono presides over a research laboratory in the field of system software and security at the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University. He specializes in operating systems, virtualization technology, and dependable systems, and has received numerous awards, including the Information Processing Society of Japan Paper Award (1999, 2008, 2009, 2012) and the Japan Society for Software Science and Technology Software Paper Award (2014).

In recent years, he has been engaged in research on confidential computing and TEE (Trusted Execution Environment), and serves as Vice Center Director at the Secure Computer System Research and Development Center (CRADSEC), a project adopted by the Economic Security Critical Technology Development Program (K Program).

▶︎ Almure's "Confidential Computing" Technology

Confidential computing is a technology that isolates and encrypts the execution environment at the hardware level, processing data in a state where it is inaccessible even to cloud providers or system administrators. While previous security measures were limited to encryption "during communication" and "at rest," confidential computing protects confidential data even "during processing." It is also referred to as Confidential Computing / Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), and includes technologies such as Confidential VM / Hardware Enclave.

Historically, computing technologies have generally been built bottom-up from a general-purpose foundational layer, but this approach has a long road to meet application requirements, and technological maturity has taken a long time. Almure takes a "purpose-built" top-down design approach, working backward from the extremely practical needs of specifications actually required by industry security standards. This enables the achievement of both cryptographic key management-level security and the versatility of advanced AI processing, which was difficult with conventional confidential computing technologies. This new technological approach, "confidential computing specialized for security compliance," will rapidly drive the conversion to customer value and the maturation of the confidential computing market.
